    About us

Timberland Excavating was founded in 2017 by forestry & restoration experts who saw a need for more contractors specializing in environmental damage remediation & public land improvement.

Our mission is to provide present & future generations with rivers, forests, and working lands that are healthier & more resilient than those we inherited.

    Jake watts

Jake is practically a preordained contractor. Growing up in a family that operated an excavation firm, he saw firsthand the power of a family business – quite literally shaping the local landscape, providing jobs, and standing as a bulwark of the American experience. Continuing that heritage, he founded Timberland Excavating to do all of those things and more. A proud small business supporting the Montana economy and improving our land & water.

    Jeff cahill

Jeff entered the workforce at age 16 knowing he wanted to build things, help people, and leave something behind to provide future benefit far past his lifetime. A lifelong outdoorsman, environmental restoration proved the perfect industry. Whether the project is remediating historically degraded
ecosystems, or building new forest road to connect people to the land around them, Jeff lives his calling on every job site.

    Testimonial

Jeff and Jake with Timberland have constructed several of my projects in challenging environments, tight budget situations, and accelerated schedules. Each time, they have approached the projects with an efficient and effective plan to deliver successful work. Their willingness to collaborate, offer innovative ideas, follow complex engineering plans, and commitment to project success are top notch.

Matt Barnes | P.E. CFM | Tetra Tech

“I have had the pleasure of working with Timberland Excavating for the past five years on various stream restoration and watershed health projects, and their excellence is unmatched. As a restoration practitioner and project manager, finding a reliable and skilled team is important, and Timberland Excavating has consistently exceeded my expectations. One aspect that particularly stands out is their ability to work independently with minimal oversight. As a project manager, this has been a game-changer for me as their self-reliance and dedication to the project have allowed me to focus on other aspects of managing a project with complete peace of mind. Also, as every project has unexpected challenges, Jake, Jeff, and their team’s adaptability and resourcefulness in overcoming these hurdles have been crucial to our project’s success. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking a skilled, reliable, and passionate contractor!”

Ben LaPorte | Restoration Program Manager | Big Hole Watershed Committee

“The team at Timberland Excavating, Inc are skilled operators with a solid understanding of stream dynamics and forest ecology.  While contracting for the Clark Fork Coalition, they have applied this knowledge towards restoring degraded streams, installing upsized culverts, and decommissioning unneeded forest roads.  They work well in challenging conditions and can adapt to changing circumstances to make sure the job gets done.”

Adam Switalski | Project Manager | Clark Fork Coalition
